Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Pearson Square Method?

The Pearson Square is a simplified, mathematical method used to balance one nutrient (typically protein) using two ingredients. It's been used by farmers for decades because it requires only basic arithmetic. You place your target protein in the center and your two ingredient protein values on the left corners. The differences are calculated diagonally and give you the mixing ratio.

Why do I need to balance protein in feed?

Balancing protein is crucial for two reasons: cost efficiency and growth optimization. Over-feeding protein wastes money (protein sources like soybean meal are expensive), while under-feeding slows growth and reduces productivity. Different animals at different stages (calves, growing cattle, lactating cows) need different protein levels. By balancing correctly, you provide exactly what your animals need without overspending.

Can I mix more than 2 ingredients?

The Pearson Square method is designed for balancing two ingredients only. For complex feed formulations with 3 or more ingredients, or when you need to balance multiple nutrients (energy, minerals, vitamins) simultaneously, you'll need linear programming or specialized software.

💡 Pro Tip: For advanced feed formulation with multiple ingredients and nutrients, try the complete Feed Module in the Herdly Farmer App. It handles complex calculations and tracks your feed inventory automatically.

What protein level should I target?

Animal TypeTarget Protein
Young calves (0-3 months)18-20%
Growing cattle (3-12 months)14-16%
Feedlot/Fattening cattle12-14%
Lactating dairy cows16-18%
Goats (growing kids)14-16%
Meat goats (finishing)12-14%
